This spring, we decided to make gardening a bigger part of our homeschool days.
Not because we’re expert gardeners.
Not because we’re trying to grow an entire farm.
But because some of the best learning happens outside with dirty hands, sunshine, and tiny seeds turning into something real.
Gardening has naturally led us into conversations about:
patience
responsibility
nutrition
pollinators
weather
and where food actually comes from
And honestly? It’s become one of my favorite ways to slow down together.
If you’ve been wanting to start a simple garden with your fam, these are some of our favorite beginner-friendly seeds that are easy, fun, and rewarding to grow.
The Seeds We’re Growing This Spring
Sunflowers
Sunflowers might be the most exciting thing for kids to grow because they get SO tall and change so quickly.
They also attract pollinators and make the garden feel extra magical during summer.
Radishes
Radishes are one of the BEST seeds for beginner gardeners because they grow quickly and help kids stay excited about gardening.
Carrots
There’s something magical about pulling carrots from the dirt and seeing what grew underneath.
Carrots are fun, easy, and perfect for beginner gardens.
Peas
Peas are one of our favorite spring vegetables because they’re simple to grow and fun to snack on right in the garden.
Tomatoes
Tomatoes always make kids feel proud once they finally start growing.
We especially love cherry tomatoes because they’re easy to snack on outside during summer.
👉 Seed trays and Peat pots worked great for us!
Dill
We added dill this year because it smells amazing and attracts pollinators too.
Plus…it just feels like summer.
Gardening Supplies We’re Using This Year
You definitely do NOT need a fancy setup to start gardening with kids.
But these simple supplies have made gardening easier for us this spring:
seed trays - comes with lights!!
seeds - love this set because it comes with plant markers and small tools!
rock paint - for plant markers
Why Gardening Has Become Part of Our Homeschool
One thing I’ve realized as a homeschool mom is that some of the best learning happens naturally outside.
Gardening has taught our kids:
patience
responsibility
problem solving
science
nutrition
teamwork
and how food actually grows
There’s something really special about watching kids grow confidence while growing something with their own hands.
Final Thoughts
We’re still learning as we go, but…that’s part of the beauty of gardening with kids.
It doesn’t need to be perfect.
A few seed packets, some dirt, and time outside together can teach more than we sometimes realize.
Happy planting 🌱
